...Sara, on the other hand, didn’t know this happened until she received a phone call from her friend saying she had given Sara’s phone number to a nice guy.

How they met:

Sara and Paul should have crossed paths years before they did. At the time, Sara’s friend was dating Paul’s best friend. Paul was shown a picture of Sara by Sara’s friend and was told that she was a nice down-to-earth girl and that he should call her.

Sara, on the other hand, didn’t know this happened until she received a phone call from her friend saying she had given Sara’s phone number to a nice guy. Sara was deciding up to the moment Paul called if she would actually answer the phone. She did! They talked that night for what seemed like eternity.

After the first call they continued to talk on the phone; they were living one hour away from one another. They made a time to go out on a date in Rutland where Paul was living. Sara drove up, waited for him and soon found out Paul was usually running late, and this day was no exception; he had gotten a flat tire. Sara, in the meantime, was almost ready to drive back home, but she stayed and was glad she did!

The proposal:

Paul proposed on September 20, 2008.

Sara was running a tag sale that day, she was up very early and not dressed up at all. She received a phone call from Paul telling her that he wanted her to meet him in Rutland so they could go hiking. Sara was not for this idea, all she wanted to do was go home and relax. Paul convinced her by saying that one of his friends was down for the weekend and that he really wanted her to meet him.

Vermont Hills Bride standingThat hour drive seemed to Sara like an eternity. When she arrived there was no friend waiting to meet her. They hiked, and at the top of the mountain Paul proposed. This came to a complete shock to Sara, after she said yes, she asked Paul if he asked her father, and he had, so it was all okay.

They celebrated that night by going out to eat; Sara ordered her favorite food, grilled cheese.

Wedding planning:

They had a long engagement, which was nice to spread out the planning. The first item checked off the list was Sara’s dress! She went with her sister and mother and found one on the first day. They both knew they wanted to marry in Vermont; Sara had lived there all her life and Paul lived there since he was very young. They attended many bridal fairs, much to Paul’s dismay. Eventually they decided on Stratton Mountain Resort. Paul had worked there, so he was very familiar with the mountain. While walking into the reception area, they knew this was the venue. It suited their personalities very well. Sara had her materials from various fairs, and continued the hunt to find a photographer, DJ and all the rest of the details.

Advice for future brides:

Make a budget first!

Work with what you can afford, all will come together! Stay organized, make a binder just for wedding items. If family or friends want to help, let them!

Sara couldn’t have gotten through the planning without her mother’s sound advice. Stay calm and focused on the meaning of your wedding.

On your wedding day, take a couple minutes to step away from the guests and look at your wedding with your husband.
