Eco Savvy Brides

Modern couples are educating their friends and family about their personal values as they prepare for their wedding day. Recently, an invitation to a bridal shower was sent to my home with the tagline at the bottom reading. “No gift wrap, please. Liz and Zach are eco-conscious.”

The terms “eco-friendly” and “eco-conscious” were coined in the late 1980s to define a new movement that showed concern for the environment and allowed for practices that were not environmentally harmful.

We are all aware of what it means to be eco-friendly, and a wedding is a great time to show how much the bridal couple
cares about the environment.

The spa model tends to be eco-conscious by design. Spas give you a relaxing natural environment that allows you to de-stress by allowing you moments to connect with tranquil natural areas, such as waterfalls, courtyards, and natural plantings. Many spas have Zen gardens or walking paths to allow you insight into your breathing and allow for meditation practice.

Spas tend to use products that have an eco component, whether it is a natural product, efficient packaging, or nontoxic products.

Here are a few simple tips for keeping your spa bridal parties eco-friendly:

• Shop Locally. Use the spa in your area that focuses on eco-friendly local products. Not only are you supporting the community, you are significantly reducing your carbon footprint by using local resources.

• Local Foods. Bring organic local wine to your spa party. There are many small organic vineyards in the state of Vermont. Pick fresh strawberries, buy scones at a local bakery or farmers’ market, purchase maple candies created individually for your event.

• Reduce Waste. Bring unwrapped gifts to your spa party. Purchase gifts for bridesmaids that leave no waste, for example, a massage.

• Decorate with natural elements. During the summer a wild flower arrangement is perfect. Get creative in the winter and use whole pomegranates with birch tree twigs and candles. Spas can give you great natural decorating ideas that you can even use at the wedding!

• Natural spa treatments. Use a spa that has nourishing natural spa treatments. Waterfalls Day Spa offers the Tata Harper Facial that combines eco-friendly local organic products with a nourishing hydrating facial.

• Low impact. Find out if the spa is low impact. How do they use resources to minimize their carbon footprint? Ways in which spas can be low impact is to minimize paper materials, guide you to online resources, recycle, use low energy lighting, and energy efficient heating and cooling.

• Community impact. Check and see if your spa has ways to donate to the community. Spas may have programs to donate spa treatments to women’s shelters, hospital volunteers, and more. Waterfalls Day Spa has a Pay It Forward

Program: spa treatments are given to individuals who are in need of stress relief and would not have the resources to make it happen. We work closely with a hospice program to support their efforts. You may feel strongly about supporting a business based on how they impact their community.

Eco-conscious weddings are a wonderful way to feel good about your big day. Adding a few eco-friendly strategies is worth your research. It makes decisions easier, and you know they don’t talk trash (pun intended).
