A wedding trend I’ve seen become more popular in the past few years are sparklers, and even more recently, paper lanterns. These activities can add a bit of magic to your evening and make for great photo opportunities, but do require a bit of proper planning.

Let’s think about the basics for a minute here. Sparklers and lanterns have fire. Are you planning to get married in a hay field in July when it hasn’t rained for a few weeks in drought conditions?  – All I am saying is just be mindful of Mother Nature, her drought conditions, and any potential flammable environment around you. Let’s not even get into how potentially flammable that pretty dress can be!

Location is something to keep in mind as well. If there is an airport in a 5 mile vicinity, they may have rules about launching lanterns or even restrict use in their flight paths. Wooded areas are also out of the question. Use common sense, and if there is anything to potentially catch a lantern, you shouldn’t be launching lanterns in that area.

If you set up a sparkler display, make sure there are plenty of buckets of water so they are doused and disposed of properly. When purchasing sparklers, don’t go cheap, the longer ones work better, and some sparklers really smoke, which is not ideal for photographs. I’m not an expert on buying them, so my best advice would be to test them before the big day. Fire extinguishers are never a bad idea either.

And, I apologize if this is a no-brainer, but I think it is worth mentioning. If you have “sparkler pics” on your wedding photo bucket list, I highly recommend hiring a photographer who knows how to take said images. Do their portfolios showcase that experience? Make sure your photographer is scheduled late enough to capture the events as well.
