Elizabeth & Amit Real Vermont Wedding Inspiration | Camp on the Lake Wedding | Vermont Bride Magazine

Elizabeth, known as Lizzy to her friends and family, and Amit wanted to incorporate Amit's Indian heritage into their wedding as much as possible. They held multiple celebrations over several days, including offering Mehndi to all of their guests the Friday before the ceremony. Read on for more of what Lizzy shared with us about their special day!

How and where did you meet?  We met at work where Amit is a software engineer and I was one of his application users.  We were friends for years before we went on our first date.

What was the proposal like?Amit proposed while hiking in Lake Placid.  I thought the proposal was weeks away and had even suggested cancelling the trip due to the weather.  Amit insisted we get away!  He also got my closest friend of high school to take me to get my nails done ahead of the trip (a detail I had said I wanted ahead of getting engaged and showing my hand to everyone).  On the day of we headed out to Ampersand Mountain where Amit was very protective of the backpack we were carrying and along the trek suggested we talk about our favorite things we had done as a couple until we reached the top and he proposed.

Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding? We wanted a beautiful place that meant something to us as a couple.

How did you choose your venue?Indian weddings in Amit’s family are multiple days long, we wanted to carry on part of that tradition to bring people together for more than just the ceremony and reception but we knew we both wanted a place that meant more to us than a hotel ballroom.  Ohana Camp is part of the Aloha Foundation of Camps where I went as a camper and counselor and was now a trustee.  To Amit, the choice was a no brainer.

What was your theme/color palette?Colorful was our palette, nothing in particular just bright color (as seen in our flowers and our food!)

What was your favorite detail from your wedding?Besides the photographs, it was food (we both love to eat)

How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple? We come from different ethnic backgrounds and wanted to mix the best of what each family had to offer from offering Mehndi to all our guests as part of our “Indian Day” on Friday to allowing many guests to experience an American summer camp for the first time.  We are also a very active couple (Amit is an ultra-marathoner) so each morning of the weekend offered a run around the lake with the groom and a walk with the bride plus swimming, canoeing, paddle boarding and so much more.  The guests even got inspired by the Summer Olympics and held their own soccer games and dive competitions.

What were some of your favorite moments?  As neither of us is a dancer, we had gone to dance lessons ahead of the wedding.  I think we both thought we would go to one lesson and be ready.  We ended up going to a few weeks of lessons with Jacki and not only did we WOW our guests and have a blast during our first dance but it also helped us to bond as a couple in the often stressful weeks leading up to the wedding.  Sitting on the porch with some of the youngest guests during the reception 3. The food, everyone raved about it.  With a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian guests plus kids I was amazed we were able to please everyone but somehow with the mix of international flavors and Vermont local ingredients we did!

What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding?Something will go wrong, I realized I forgot to order cocktail table cloths on the Thursday leading to the wedding and so was able to accept it and then I didn’t have the pressure for the weekend to be “perfect”.  I think I enjoyed it so much more as a result.
