Alexandria & Tyler's Rainbow Romance

Dreaming Mountain, Johnson, Vermont

The moment we saw it, we were instantly charmed with Alexandria and Tyler's bright and colorful wedding. Every whimsical detail from the rainbow colored shoes on the groomsmen, to the rustic and casual candle displays on the tables, pulled us in and warmed our hearts. This is a wedding that seeps personal style and meaningful moments.

Here is what Alexandria told us about their special day;

Wedding Date: May 25, 2013

Our New Name: Neither Tyler nor I felt comfortable with the traditional expectation of the woman taking the man’s name after marriage so we came up with something that worked for us. We combined letters from our surnames and our mothers’ maiden names to create a new family name that held special meaning to each of us: Magnolia! During the wedding ceremony our parents helped us plant a Magnolia tree and we exited the ceremony to the song Sugar Magnolia by the Grateful Dead.

How and where did you meet? We met briefly at Nectar’s in Burlington during Tyler’s New Year’s Eve “Operation: Prince” show but were then reintroduced by mutual friends at the Radio Bean a couple weeks later. I (Alex) found out that Tyler taught piano lessons and so I asked if he would teach me. I had one lesson and that was all it took!

Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding? I grew up in New Hampshire and Tyler grew up outside of Chicago, Illinois but the beautiful state of Vermont is where we met and fell in love and is where we lived together at the time of our wedding.

How did you choose your venue? We had heard about Dreaming Mountain from some friends who had played music there and when we went to visit we knew it was the right place for us.

What was your theme/color palette? Rainbow

What was your favorite detail from your wedding? VW bus photobooth, matching childhood pictures of Tyler and I on each table

How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple? Tyler and I designed our wedding together with an equal amount of effort from both of us. We made as much as possible at home and kept nearly everything else local - created by family, friends, or our larger Vermont community. We included lots of music, color, and creativity in our day and we were totally ourselves. I had my hair done at home and did not wear makeup. Our products were sustainably sourced, our food was vegan, our dog Jack was our ring bearer, and we spent our wedding night in a yurt!

What were some of your favorite moments? Seeing each other for the first time, reading our handwritten vows to each other, being surrounded by family and friends, walking into the reception tent and having it feel magical, sharing our first dance, our guests singing Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen together, so many wonderful moments!

What was the song you had your first dance to? Space Captain by Joe Cocker (Tedeschi Trucks version)

How did your vendors help make your wedding day perfect? Our wedding could have been a disaster if not for the amazing people from Have Your Cake Catering. There was massive flooding the day of our wedding and our caterers went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure all of our guests were comfortable and taken care of.

What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding? Invite only the people who mean the most to you. Homemade is best! The details of your wedding should reflect who you are as a couple and your personal values… even if that means long nights spent gluing invitations together!
